How to Make Friends with Chinese Evergreens
SOIL
Use an all-purpose potting mix.
LIGHT
Most Chinese evergreen plants do well in low light, such as that from a north-facing window. If you have a brightly colored variety, put it in a brighter location, such as an east-facing window.
WATER AND HUMIDITY
Water your Chinese evergreen when the top inch or two (2.5–5 cm) of the soil feels dry. It will tolerate an occasional missed watering. Humidity levels are not a particular issue with this plant.
TEMPERATURE
Room temperatures of 60–80°F (16–27°C) are suitable for this plant.
SIZE
The size of Chinese evergreens varies by species, but many plants are 1–2 feet (30–60 cm) tall.
BUGS AND DISEASE
Watch out for scale (page 41).
OTHER TIPS
The leaves tend to collect dust, so wipe them down periodically with a damp cloth.
